The French Senate has adopted the resolution on the need to recognize the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh. The Senate voted 305 to 1 for the resolution, 30 members abstained.
During the Senate session that lasted for about two hours the members called on the French government to stand by the Armenian people and recognize the independence of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh.
The resolution was initiated by Senators Bruno Retailleau, Patrick Kanner, Hervé Marseille, Éliane Assassi, Guillaume Gontard.
Aside from other clauses, the resolution covers the following points:
- Recommends the French government to recognize the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh;
- Condemns Azerbaijan’s aggression backed by Turkey and foreign mercenaries and demands withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops from the territories captured in the result of the military actions since September 27,
- Urges the French government to make efforts to resume the process of negotiations mediated by Minsk Group with a view to restoring the borders of 1994, the security of the Armenian population and the return of displaced people, as well as defend the Armenian cultural and religious heritage,
- The resolution recalls the massacres of Armenians in Sumgait, Kirovabad, Baku and Maragha, refers to the reports of ECRI and CERD on Azerbaijan to conclude on the impossibility for the Armenian population to live within Azerbaijan.
